• St. Clements Island State Park - (Scotland, MD) - The 40 acre park contains a memorial cross dedicated to the memory of the first Marylanders. Accessible only by boat. Boat tours to historic St. Clement's Island are offered on a weekend schedule by the Potomac River Museum. The 26 passenger vessel, The Water Taxi II, is fully insured and a certified tour boat by the U.S. Coast Guard.

• St. Mary's River State Park - (Scotland, MD) - Situated at the northern end of the St. Mary's River watershed, the park shows a wide range of habitats, from wooded acres and fields to swamps and small streams. With such a diversity, you can also find many different types of plant and animal species.

• Janes Island State Park - (Crisfield, MD) - With two distinct areas, Janes Island State Park has a developed mainland section with cabins and camping areas, and a portion accessible only by boat. The original island inhabitants were Native Americans of the Annemessex Nation. The park's Chesapeake Bay location provides water activity opportunities and the miles of isolated shorelines and marsh areas delight visitors who enjoy the peaceful solitude of natural areas.

• Fort Frederick State Park - (Big Pool, MD) - The site of Maryland's frontier defense during the French and Indian War (1754-1763), the Fort's stone wall and two barracks have been restored to their 1758 appearance. Historic displays are in the Fort, barracks and Visitor Center. The park annually holds military reenactments and other special events. Park lands adjoin the Potomac River and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal passes through park acreage. Tours are available by request. Daily Living History programming is available from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

• Gathland State Park - (Burkittsville, MD) - Once the mountain home of George Alfred Townsend, a Civil War journalist. It is the site of a unique collection of buildings and structures that he designed and constructed, some of which have been restored. A large, stone monument dedicated to war correspondents is an outstanding attraction at this day use park. (140 acres) The Appalachian Trail traverses the park and passes the monument base. Maryland has 37.5 miles of the interstate hiking trail.

• Greenbrier State Park - (Boonsboro, MD) - Greenbrier is a multi-use park providing many kinds of recreation. The Appalachian Trail passes near the park. The 42-acre man-made lake and beach draw many visitors who enjoy swimming, canoeing, hiking, picnicking, interpretive programs and nature study.

• South Mountain State Park - (Boonsboro, MD) - This historic park has over 10,000 acres for year-round hiking along the Appalachian Trail. South Mountain, a ridge composed largely of resistant quartzite, posed a formidable obstacle to the early settlers until 1755 when General Edward Braddock and a young surveyor, George Washington, constructed a road over one of its passes. Greenbrier, Washington Monument and Gathland are neighboring state parks along South Mountain. Echo Lake, a small section of South Mountain State Park, is an area that may be reserved for organized youth groups.

• Washington Monument State Park - (Boonsboro, MD) - In Washington County, four miles east of Boonsboro and 1 1/2 miles north of Alternate Route 40 on Monument Road, Washington Monument State Park is named for the first monument in the country erected to the "father of our country," George Washington. A rugged stone tower was dedicated to the first president by the citizens of Boonsboro in 1827.

• Assateague State Park - (Berlin, MD) - Maryland's only ocean park is located on Assateague Island, a barrier island bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by Sinepuxent Bay. Two miles of ocean beaches offer swimming, beachcombing, sunbathing, surfing and fishing. The island's bayside offers canoeing to secluded coves. The marsh areas have a variety of wildlife, including deer and feral horses. Assateague was selected by National Geographic Travel magazine in 1994 as one of the 10 best state parks in the United States.

• Pocomoke River State Park - (Snow Hill, MD) - With 14,753 wooded acres in the Southwestern section of Worcester County, between Snow Hill and Pocomoke City, the state forest is famous for it's stand of loblolly pine and for it's cypress swamps which border the Pocomoke River. Pocomoke means black water, and there is good fishing in these waters. The river originates in the Great Cypress Swamp in Delaware and flows southwesterly 45 miles to the Chesapeake Bay.
